The Million Dollar Highway and the Streets of Gold

The Million Dollar Highway—that breathtaking stretch of U.S. 550 between Ouray and Silverton—has earned its reputation for jaw‑dropping beauty and white‑knuckle curves. It clings to the mountainside like a ribbon of courage, winding through Red Mountain Pass with no guardrails, sheer drops, and scenery so stunning it almost feels unreal.

But even this legendary road is only a faint whisper of another roadway scripture describes—the Streets of Gold in New Jerusalem. One road demands courage; the other is the reward for a life of faith.

The Million Dollar Highway is gorgeous, but it’s not gentle. It’s narrow. It’s steep. It’s unpredictable. It requires your full attention. In many ways, it mirrors the Christian journey—a path filled with breathtaking moments of God’s goodness, yet also sharp turns, storms, and stretches where you grip the wheel and pray. Jesus described the life of faith as a narrow road:

“But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:14

Like that Colorado highway, the narrow road isn’t always comfortable. It’s not always safe. But it is always worth it. Revelation 21:21 gives us a glimpse of heaven’s streets—pure gold, like transparent glass. No potholes. No cliffs. No danger. No fear. Where the Million Dollar Highway demands courage, the Streets of Gold rewardit. Where the Million Dollar Highway has drop-offs, heaven has foundations of precious stones (Revelation 21:19). Where the Million Dollar Highway winds through shadows, heaven has no night at all (Revelation 21:25). The roads of earth test us. The roads of heaven welcome us.

On the Million Dollar Highway, you learn to trust your brakes, your steering, and your sense of direction. On the road of life, you learn to trust God. Proverbs 3:5–6 says:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He will make your paths straight.”

Even when the path feels like a cliffside curve, God is the One who keeps you steady. And when the journey is over, He leads you to a city where the roads don’t test your faith—they testify to it.

The Million Dollar Highway gives you million‑dollar views—mountains glowing red, valleys carved by time, peaks that scrape the sky. But Scripture says heaven’s glory makes even earth’s greatest beauty look dim by comparison. Romans 8:18 reminds us:

“The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory
that will be revealed in us.”

The best scenery on earth is just a preview. A trailer. A teaser of the real thing.

The Million Dollar Highway is a journey you’ll never forget. The Streets of Gold are a destination you’ll never regret. One shows you the majesty of creation. The other shows you the majesty of the Creator. One requires courage to travel. The other is the reward for traveling faithfully. One is carved into mountains. The other is carved into eternity.

If your life feels like that cliffside road—narrow, steep, and a little scary—remember this: You’re not driving alone. God is with you on every mile, every curve, every climb. And at the end of the journey, there’s a city waiting for you—radiant, safe, joyful—where the roads shine like gold, and the presence of God lights every step.

Control

Accepting God’s gift of salvation is easy. “Even a caveman can do it.” (A line from a famous commercial some years ago.) What’s not so simple is giving God control of your life. It seems a lot of people still want to make significant decisions on their own. Then, when they find themselves in trouble, they wonder why.

After graduating college and landing a drafting job with the local electric company, I felt I was set for life. After all, as I was starting my career there, my uncle retired from the same company. But God had other plans. I was offered a youth pastor’s position in a small church 1,582 miles away. The problem? They couldn’t afford to pay me. Crazy right? Who in their right mind would take such a position? Believe me, I heard a lot of opinions from others who I knew were concerned for me. My father’s thoughts were the loudest, though.

After a lot of prayer, I did what God called me to. I was scared, but I felt assured that He knew what He was doing. It turns out He did, and all of my needs were met.

That experience taught me to seek God whenever making decisions about things like where to live, where to work, and where to spend money above and beyond living costs. Oh, don’t forget who to marry. These are the areas of life that most don’t even think to ask God about. Somehow, they feel these decisions are theirs. And some go as far as to tell God, “Hands off!”

Of course, God allows this because He gives us free will. But I can only wonder how much it aches his heart when the decisions people make hurt them. God wants the best for us, and He has the ability to see beyond the edge of the map. He knows in advance what decisions are good ones and which ones aren’t.

I would have to say that letting God have complete control of my life has allowed me to have a wonderful life and one of the most incredible adventures anyone could ever live.

It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone. Eph. 1:11-12 (MSG)

Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
    don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
    he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.
    Run to God! Run from evil!
Your body will glow with health,
    your very bones will vibrate with life!
Honor God with everything you own;
    give him the first and the best.
Your barns will burst,
    your wine vats will brim over.
But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline;
    don’t sulk under his loving correction.

When It Matters

Figuring out life can be difficult at times, but as I have learned, it is even more challenging when your “money meter” displays, “LOW!” At least the “Fuel” light is not on, not yet anyway. When funds are abundant, it seems like you just do what needs to be done almost without considering the cost. The line between “want” and “need” gets dimmer. It’s easy, at times, to convince yourself that you “need” something that honestly is a “want.”

Whether you have a lot of money or not, it is always best to take your thoughts to the Lord. If He truly is the “Lord” over all things in your life, then decisions about how or where to spend should be guided by him. After all, those financial resources came from Him and are His.

The part of Him leading me I appreciate the most is in deciding what to buy, what brand, and what product. And at times, from where. I have found that if I feel uneasy about pulling the trigger on something, the best thing to do is wait.

“I am God, your God,
    who teaches you how to live right and well.
    I show you what to do, where to go. Isa. 48:17 (MSG)

Submit your plans unto the Lord. Trust Him to accept and hear your proposal and thoughts; what you have determined in your mind is good. It also is a good idea to talk about matters of life with your spouse. After all, they are to be your “helpmate.” And when they share their thoughts, be sure not to make fun of what they say. Their words and insights might just be what you need to hear; and who knows, it may very well be the words of the Lord speaking through them. Another source is with a trusted friend who you know walks with God. Finding a friend like that is like finding gold. Value them, express how much they mean to you, and appreciate them.

What Happened?

Have you ever wondered, where did it all go wrong? Or, how did they end up like this? I have. You look at someone’s life and you can’t quite figure out how they got where they are today.

I heard it said the other day, “I made a wrong turn on the way to church!” That kind of says it all. Somehow the individual took their eyes off of Jesus and looked instead at what was around them. Kind of like Peter when he was walking on the water. He let his circumstances disrupt his fixed gaze on the Master, on Jesus.

“Church” doesn’t save you, or even just “going to church” doesn’t either! I know a couple of women who “go to church” every time the doors are open, but there is no love of God in their hearts! As a result, people get hurt.

Back to the people who have strayed from the truth; they started looking at what Satan was offering them “now” that would fulfill that longing desire in their heart instead of waiting on God to provide something or someone pure, holy, and a part of Him.

The wonderful truth is this; it’s never too late to backtrack and take the right street to the church. In other words, it’s never too late to return to God. Most likely there is someone who is praying you would and God is sitting on the front porch staring down the road as far as He can hoping to see you come over the horizon toward him! He is waiting with open arms.

Roll the Dice

The title of this blog post, “Roll the Dice” is a phrase that comes from gambling.  A similar phrase is, “Let the chips fall where they may.”  Both of these phrases were spoken to me today by a believer in God.  I shared with my friend, who said them, “I don’t like either phrase.”  He replied, “Why not?”

I know he meant well, but he was talking about a situation that he does have authority over, because God gave it to him.  You see, when you are walking in the will of God, and He places you in a position that He wants you to have, and you pray giving the situation over to God, to be God in, then it is not up to “chance”!

Things will not fall where they may, or be decided by the roll of dice, or by any half hazard means of chance, but will work out for good for those who love God. This brings glory to God. His word says so.

 “And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose,” Rom. 8:28 (NET)

This verse is well known, so why don’t those who know it, believe it?  And better yet, why don’t they live according to that knowledge?  It’s powerful!  Its life changing, and situation changing as well.

So the next time you are in a pickle, or dealing with a difficult situation, pray!  Give it to God!  Then walk with your head up, knowing, and trusting God has heard you and that it will work out just the way He wants it to in order to do a good and perfect work in the lives of all who are involved.

“Amen!”  Now that’s good preaching if I do say so myself.  Where’s the offering plate?  This message is worthy of an offering!
