I Tasted Sin

taste of sinNow I know what sin taste like!  I was buying some sparkling water in downtown Chicago when there it was.  Its dark covering looked so appealing.  It was as if the packaging itself was saying, “Mark, come hither.”  It’s okay.  You can eat just one.  This one small bag won’t hurt you.  Look, it’s a limited edition.  You better hurry.  You don’t want to miss out.  You don’t want to be the only one that doesn’t know what this taste like do you?”

Isn’t that just like sin?  I know these phrases have been used from the beginning of mankind.  From satan tempting Eve with the forbidden fruit to this bag of milk chocolate Wavy Lay’s potato chips.  “Milk” that’s healthy isn’t it?  Doesn’t milk do a body good?  “Yes!” I bought the bag.

Sin – it draws us in through the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.  You see – you want.  You imagine – you feel.  You think – you become.  All of this starts in the mind.  That is why the bible instructs us to “bring EVERY thought into captivity.” Capture the thought, and let it become subjective to God’s words, God’s ways, and God’s plan.

Sometimes sin isn’t presented in obvious packages, but introduced to us subtlety, slowly.  Watch, be aware, and be mindful of how satan tries to use your weaknesses to kill, steal, or destroy you.  He doesn’t care about you, he is just trying to get revenge on God

Oh!  In no way am I saying it’s a sin to eat chocolate covered potato chips, but find a group of people to share them with, so you don’t over indulge and become a gluten.  Now that might be a sin.

Surviving Life

Life preserverWhat does it take to survive today?  Life can be harsh, unforgiving, and even down right cruel.  Unfortunately, so can people.  What do you try to do to survive?  Does it work?  Has life disappointed you?  Have people?  Is any of this let down caused by you, and your actions?  Would you admit it, or are you one of those where it is always someone else’s fault?

Being raised in church I have heard the right things said many times, but you know what, they are true words even to this day.  That a life lived with Jesus Christ is so much more than a life lived without Him.  Yes it takes faith, hope and love.  Faith that there is hope that there is one who truly loves.  Jesus is that one who truly loves you and me.  He is our hope that there is a better life coming, and to get us started in believing this He provides each of us a measure of faith.  This is how you survive life.

Human Remains Found

the rapture 2Isn’t it funny how you can read the bible several different times and each time see something new?  I think that may have something to do with who you are and what you are going through at that time.  Well recently in the following scriptures one word stuck out to me:

1Th 4:16  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:  1Th 4:17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (KJV)

When I was young people used to joke that in verse 16 “the dead in Christ” was referring to the Baptist, but it’s not!  The portion of scripture that made me start thinking in particularly is verse 17 where it states, “Then we which are alive and remain”.  I know this scripture is really just referring to those that are still alive and “remain” on earth, but what if we looked at this word “remain” a little differently.

What if this word “remain” really meant still living for God?  So this verse would say, “Then we which are alive and still living for God shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

Living for God has always been hard, because it calls us to living a life that is opposite of our very nature.  It is easier to just be our natural self, especially when we see all of the evil and hatred around us.  Living for God can cause us to get weary.  Some get so disgruntled with not having what so many others have that they give up hope and fall away from living for God to living for themselves.  That is why living for God takes God Himself helping us, encouraging us, and strengthening us.

Jesus is for sure coming back to call us home.  I pray that you will still be alive and “remain” in Him.  Our struggle is only for a moment compared to eternity of peace, joy and love with the Lord who loves us more than anything.  With the Lord who actually died for us.  When Jesus comes back may He find humans remain!

This Is Crazy

Idols 2I have been doing my reading of the bible from the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament (The Message version).  What a good book loaded with adventure, wisdom, and even humor.  In chapter 44, Isaiah writes about idols.

Isa 44:9 All those who make no-god idols…and what they work so hard at making is nothing. Their little puppet-gods see nothing and know nothing–they’re total embarrassments!  Isa 44:10 Who would bother making gods that can’t do anything, that can’t “god”?  Isa 44:11 Watch all the no-god worshipers hide their faces in shame. Watch the no-god makers slink off humiliated when their idols fail them. Get them out here in the open. Make them face God-reality.  Isa 44:13 The woodworker draws up plans for his no-god, traces it on a block of wood. He shapes it with chisels and planes into human shape–a beautiful woman, a handsome man, ready to be placed in a chapel.  Isa 44:14 He first cuts down a cedar, or maybe picks out a pine or oak, and lets it grow strong in the forest, nourished by the rain.  Isa 44:15 Then it can serve a double purpose: Part he uses as firewood for keeping warm and baking bread; from the other part he makes a god that he worships–carves it into a god shape and prays before it.  Isa 44:16 With half he makes a fire to warm himself and barbecue his supper. He eats his fill and sits back satisfied with his stomach full and his feet warmed by the fire: “Ah, this is the life.”  Isa 44:17  And he still has half left for a god, made to his personal design–a handy, convenient no-god to worship whenever so inclined. Whenever the need strikes him he prays to it, “Save me. You’re my god.” Isa 44:18 Pretty stupid, wouldn’t you say? Don’t they have eyes in their heads? Are their brains working at all?  Isa 44:19 Doesn’t it occur to them to say, “Half of this tree I used for firewood: I baked bread, roasted meat, and enjoyed a good meal. And now I’ve used the rest to make an abominable no-god. Here I am praying to a stick of wood!”  Isa 44:20  This lover of emptiness, of nothing, is so out of touch with reality, so far gone, that he can’t even look at what he’s doing, can’t even look at the no-god stick of wood in his hand and say, “This is crazy.”

We don’t see too many people making physical idols these days, well some religions still do, but in our time most put “things” before the one true God.  Things like careers, power, money, fame, relationships, etc.  Praying, hoping and trusting that these things will bring them happiness, but they don’t.  Give up your hope in these “things” and begin to pray to the God who sees you, knows you, and loves you.  Then act like you believe and trust in Him.  Give Him time to work in your life.  Doing so is not crazy!

It’s New

“New”.  What a short, buNewt powerful little word.  We all love something “new”.  A “new” house, a “new” car, “new” clothes, or even a “new” relationship (friend or otherwise).  When things are “new” they look better, feel better, and perhaps even smell better.

This month we have a “new” year.  It’s clean, fresh, it feels good.  Another chance to start over, do more, do better, get it right.  Like a clean slate.  But the reality is unless you make a conscious effort to purposely try harder, do things different, it doesn’t take long for the “new” to get dirty.  The new house will need cleaning, and the car will need washing, or the clothes.  And that new friend?  Well, they will turn out to be like the others have been for the most part. Then you say to yourself, “It’s just another car, another house, another friend, or just another year.  No big deal.”

So how do we make this year different?  We really cannot help ourselves.  Will power?  That’s great, but my name isn’t “Will”!  If I really want this year to be different, more, better, then I must turn to the one who can empower me to achieve any desires, goals, or resolutions. Jesus is the one who strengthens me, not just for today, or this month, or while the year is new, but all year.  Even if I get a little dirt on the year it’s not over, but He cleanses me by forgiving me when I ask, and makes things “new” again.

Here is to New!

Instructions for the Season, For Life

“Tis the season!” so they say, but for what?  Is this the season to spend too much money?  Go in debt?  Extend ourselves beyond belief?  Get so tired and then possibly grouchy?  (Like me)  Honestly I have found it so difficult this year to quiet my heart and mind to focus on why we do all this crazy stuff we do to so call, “Celebrate Christmas”.  Even now my mind is thinking of starting a new “To-Do-List”.

Why can’t I go to a quiet manger right now, and get on bended knee (if it didn’t hurt too much to get bamangerck up) and to truly worship the King of Kings?  When Jesus was born Mary and Joseph didn’t go to one party, but yet their hearts rejoiced, their spirits danced, and their voices were no doubt raised to sing praises to the Christ child.  Knowing that this baby was the savior of the world.  Can you even begin to imagine the responsibility they had?  I’m sure the instructions probably just said, “Love”, and “Handle with Care”.

I think those instructions are perfect for today as well.  “Love” and “Handle with Care”.  Do this for those you encounter, and especially for the ones who call you family.

May God bless every one of you above all you could ever imagine. (Eph 3:20)

Merry Christmas

The Other Side

DogWhat is it about the other side?  What is it on the other side that looks so appealing?  Is it really better than what we already have on the side we are on?  If we waited long enough would what is on the other side be on our side?  Will what is on the other side satisfy us any better than what we have?  Or will going after what is on the other side cause us to get stuck?  Stuck in a bad relationship, a bad job, a bad business deal?  Causing us to ask ourselves, “Now what?”  Perhaps it is always better to just be content with what we have on the side we are on.

Paul (from the bible) said it like this:

Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.  (Phi. 4:11-13  MSG)

Author Shauna Niequist once said, “If you want the grass to be green on your side of the fence then water it.”

So be happy with what you have.  Stop looking to see what is on the other side.  You might just learn that what you have is pretty good after all, and perhaps everyone else is wanting what you have on your side?

Does God Move You?

If you believe in God and believe in him to lead you and guide you, have you ever stopped to think just how He does that?  I think it would blow our minds right out of our skulls if we could even begin to comprehend the enormity of such a task.  You see in order for God to put us in the right place at the right time, He also has to orchestrate, not just our steps, but the movements of others thus putting everyone where they need to be at any given moment in time and space.

Some might say things just have a way of working out, while others would call an encounter a coincident.  I once heard someone say that a coincident is a small miracle where God insist on remaining anonymous!  I’m not sure, but I like the thought of that statement.  He certainly doesn’t brag when He pulls off a complicated task in just 3 moves and say, “Hey, did you see what I did there?”

But back to God, He already knows where He wants us and how many moves it will take to achieve his plan.  He knows the order of events that must take place, and to think all of this isn’t just for your life, but He also does this for everyone who has surrendered their life to him.  Sometimes we wonder why certain things we ask God for take so long to happen.  I assure you if you tried to make things happen in your life it would take much longer, because we cannot move others to where we might want them.  Those others do not surrender their lives to us.  And then, and then when we do try to make things happen and wind up going in the wrong direction for a while God is still able to get us back on his path.  I assure you we do not surprise God, or throw him any curve balls.  He knows, so He has already taken into account how many more moves it will take.  This is why it is important to remember to let God move you!

Saying Goodbye

Saying goodbye is goodbyehard sometimes.  Today as I was driving, while running errands, I noticed that nature was saying goodbye to summer.  Instead of a grey, sad, display of emotion I saw a bright, brilliant colorful celebration of change.  This summer here in Chicago was one of the best ever.  The weather was pleasant, the temperatures were comfortable.  I really do hate to see this summer end.  And now as we do say goodbye to summer we get to enjoy exuberant colors.  Nature knows how to say goodbye gracefully.

In life there are times we have to say goodbye to people.  Some move away, others go to college, some go back to their homes far away after a nice visit, and then there are those in our life that just move on.  Some you say goodbye to knowing again you will see them, and yet others you may never see again.  Those can be the hardest to say goodbye to.  It is in those times we have an opportunity to display grace and understanding or we can choose something darker that can hurt.

When Jesus left the face of the earth he left in a cloud.  Not a bad way to travel I must say.  I would joke that He flew “Standby”, but actually He had a reservation.  When He said goodbye He gave us a promise.

“What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world. These were his last words. As they watched, he was taken up and disappeared in a cloud.” (Act 1:8-9 MSG)

As you can see saying goodbye, though hard, can be good.  In nature the earth rest during winter.  Getting ready for a new year, a new season of life.  When Jesus said goodbye He gave us a promise of the Holy Spirit to help us minister and live with power.  We should learn to say goodbye gracefully, and accept the change.

Are You On the Right Road?

My daughter called me the other day, and as our conversation continued the subject of “road rage” came up.  She asked me, “Dad?  How come it is so hard sometimes to remain Christ like when you share the road with people who drive like idiots?”  I laughed, and thought, “Well I certainly know where she got that from!”  “Her mother of course!”  Okay, she got it from me.  I feel really bad that I cannot even drive the 9 blocks to the train station sometimes without getting put out with how someone is driving.  As a result I tend to think and even say out loud words that I know would not bring glory to God.  I feel so bad, and I say, “God I’m so sorry!  Please forgive me.  I don’t want to be like this.  Help me God.”  Knowing I was going to write about this subject you cannot begin to fathom the joy and excitement I had when while I was having my chair time with God I came across the following verses:

“There will be a highway called the Holy Road. No one rude or rebellious is permitted on this road. It’s for GOD’s people exclusively– impossible to get lost on this road. Not even fools can get lost on it. No lions on this road, no dangerous wild animals– Nothing and no one dangerous or threatening. Only the redeemed will walk on it. The people GOD has ransomed will come back on this road. They’ll sing as they make their way home to Zion, unfading halos of joy encircling their heads, Welcomed home with gifts of joy and gladness as all sorrows and sighs scurry into the night.”  (Isiah 35:8-10 MSG)

What a promise that God gives us!  (And God always keeps His promises!)  A road with “no one rude, dangerous or threatening”?  It’s almost unbelievable.  I can be on the road and have nothing happen to me that would generate a response out of me that would cause my halo to fade.  I certainly need to learn to change how I look at others on the road that potentially could cause me harm.  When I see them, knowing they obviously don’t see me, I need to pray for them.  I need to pray that God would intervene in their lives.  That He would be God and smooth out their lives so they are no longer so troubled by life that they have difficulties focusing on driving.

This promise that God gives us of a highway called the Holy Road, is only for those whom have accepted Jesus Christ to be the Lord of their life.  Are you on this road?
